If you are planning to travel in December, book by September at the latest. Not “consider booking” — actually commit. We regularly receive calls in November from people who assumed fares would come down and are now paying £300–£500 more per person than they would have in August.

January return fares can be equally expensive. If you have any flexibility on your return date, travelling back in mid-January rather than the first week saves significantly.

Lagos airport has a justified reputation for being busy and occasionally chaotic, particularly on arrival. A few things that make it much smoother:

• Terminal 2 (MMA2) is the international terminal and significantly better than Terminal 1. Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic all use Terminal 2. Confirm your terminal when you book.
• Arrive at the airport 3 hours before departure for international flights. Lagos traffic to the airport is notoriously unpredictable, especially in the mornings and on Fridays. Build in buffer time.
• Declare cash on arrival if you are carrying more than $10,000 USD equivalent. Nigerian customs spot-check arriving passengers and large undeclared sums can cause significant delays.
• Use pre-booked transfers. The taxi situation outside arrivals can be overwhelming, especially late at night. Book your hotel transfer in advance.
