Ghana holds a unique place in the hearts of the African diaspora. In 2019, the Ghanaian government launched the “Year of Return” — a landmark invitation to the global African diaspora to reconnect with their ancestral homeland. Hundreds of thousands responded, including a large wave of UK Ghanaians making their first visit home in years. The “Beyond the Return” initiative has kept that momentum going ever since, and demand for London to Accra flights has remained elevated as a result.
Ghana is also consistently ranked as one of the safest and most welcoming countries in West Africa for visitors. If you are planning your first trip to the region, Accra is an outstanding place to start.

No flight to Accra is complete without a visit to Ghana’s coast, 3 hours west of the capital. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and among the most significant historical sites in Africa — the departure points for millions of enslaved Africans during the transatlantic slave trade. For members of the African diaspora, particularly UK Ghanaians and British Caribbeans, visiting these sites is a profound and emotionally important experience.
The Cape Coast region also offers beautiful beaches, Kakum National Park (one of the few places in Africa to offer a canopy walkway), and a relaxed coastal atmosphere very different from the energy of Accra.
With over 250,000 people of Ghanaian heritage in the UK — concentrated in London, but with significant communities across Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester — Ghana has one of the most vibrant and well-connected diaspora communities in Britain. Many UK Ghanaians travel home for Christmas (Ghanaian December is a major social season), for family events, and increasingly for investment and business as Ghana’s economy continues to grow. Calling us for group bookings for family travel is always worth it.
Accra’s Kotoka International Airport underwent a major upgrade with the opening of Terminal 3 in 2018. It is the most modern terminal in West Africa and handles all long-haul international arrivals — including Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways and most carriers UK travellers use. The experience is considerably smoother than older West African terminals.
Entry requirements: UK citizens no longer need a visa in advance for Ghana. Ghana introduced visa-on-arrival for most nationalities including UK passport holders — available at Kotoka Airport. Cost is approximately USD 150 for 30 days. We recommend confirming current requirements before travel as policies can change.
Cheapest months: January (mid-month), February, October and November. Most expensive: December (Ghanaian Christmas social season — the “December in Accra” phenomenon has made this one of the most expensive months to fly to West Africa from the UK). July–August are also expensive.
Best weather: November to March is the harmattan season — drier, slightly dusty but comfortable. April–June and September–November see some rainfall. Ghana is tropical and warm year-round.
