The UK is home to one of the world’s largest Somali diaspora communities — an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people of Somali heritage, concentrated in London (particularly Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Ealing), Bristol, Leicester and Cardiff. For many families, the flight from the UK to Mogadishu is deeply personal: a journey back to a country many left during the civil war years, now returning to reconnect with family, culture, and a city that has changed dramatically.
Mogadishu today is not the city many UK Somalis left behind. Reconstruction has accelerated significantly — new hotels, a rebuilt coastline, functioning businesses and a growing sense of national recovery. At Ethiopian Flights, we respect what this journey means and work hard to find you the most affordable, reliable routing.

For the UK Somali community, this route carries an emotional weight unlike almost any other African flight from Britain. Many families fled Somalia in the 1990s and have not returned in 20 or 30 years. Others travel regularly — for family visits, business, and an increasingly compelling sense that Mogadishu is rebuilding itself into something worth returning to.
The city’s coastline — Lido Beach in particular — has reopened to residents and visitors. New hotels, restaurants and cafes have appeared along the Hamarweyne waterfront. The Bakaara Market, once synonymous with chaos and conflict, now operates as a functioning commercial centre. The Somali Federal Government has restored a degree of stability to the capital that would have seemed impossible a decade ago.
We understand that for many UK Somali families, this is not a holiday flight. It is a homecoming. We treat these bookings with the care they deserve and always advise on the most reliable routing options available.
The most common routing for UK passengers. Ethiopian Airlines flies from London Heathrow to Addis Ababa Bole, then connects onward to Mogadishu. Addis is a well-organised transit hub with short connection times (typically 2–3 hours), automatic baggage transfer on a single ticket, and reliable onward connections. This is usually the best value option and our most-booked routing for this destination.
An alternative routing that works well for some schedules. Nairobi is 1–2 hours from Mogadishu by air and has multiple daily connections. This routing can sometimes be cheaper or better-timed depending on the travel dates. Our team will check both options when you enquire.
Travel advice: The UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office currently advises against all travel to Somalia due to the security situation. We strongly recommend checking the latest FCDO advice at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/somalia before booking. Many UK Somalis with family ties travel to Mogadishu regularly and make their own informed judgement about conditions — we respect that, and simply ask that you make that decision with current, accurate information.
Documentation: Somali passport holders travelling on a UK document will need to confirm entry requirements with the Somali Embassy. UK-born passengers of Somali heritage on British passports should check current visa requirements before travel.
Peak periods: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are the busiest travel periods for this route from the UK. Book well in advance — ideally 8–12 weeks ahead — for these dates. Ramadan (with Eid at the end) creates particularly strong demand from UK Somali, Ethiopian and East African communities simultaneously.
The cheapest months on the UK to Mogadishu route are February, March, September and October. Prices rise significantly around Eid periods and in December–January. Ramadan travel (dates shift annually) creates predictable price spikes as the Eid travel peak approaches. Call us for current fare availability.
