Johannesburg - known as Joburg or eGoli, city of gold - is South Africa's largest city and the financial hub of the entire African continent. O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is Africa's busiest airport and the most connected hub on the continent, making Johannesburg an excellent gateway for onward travel across southern and eastern Africa. The large South African diaspora in the UK makes this one of our most frequently booked African routes.
Johannesburg has a high-altitude climate with warm summers (October to April) and dry, sunny winters (May to September). The winter months are actually the most pleasant for visiting - clear skies, mild temperatures of 15 to 20C during the day, and the cheapest fares from the UK outside school holidays. Peak UK demand is December and July school holidays. Total flight time is approximately 11 to 12 hours direct.
Joburg offers the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site and the regenerated Maboneng Precinct. The city is also the gateway to Kruger National Park (4 to 5 hours by road), Sun City, the Drakensberg and Victoria Falls. For the sizeable South African community in the UK - particularly in London, Surrey and Hampshire - Joburg is the primary destination for family visits and major life events.
O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is located 25 km east of central Johannesburg. The Gautrain rapid rail service connects the airport to Sandton in 15 minutes and to Park Station in central Joburg in around 30 minutes.
