Freetown is one of West Africa's most historic cities, founded in 1792 as a settlement for freed slaves. The city is known for its beautiful beaches along the Freetown Peninsula - including Lumley Beach, River No. 2 Beach and Tokeh Beach - as well as the famous Cotton Tree, the Sierra Leone National Museum and the vibrant local markets. Sierra Leone has a strong and well-established diaspora community in the UK, and Freetown is a warm and welcoming destination for returning visitors and first-time travellers alike.
Sierra Leone's dry season runs November to April - this is the best time to visit for beach holidays and general travel. The rainy season (May to October) brings heavy downpours but also lush green landscapes and lower fares. Peak UK diaspora demand is December. Total flight time via Addis Ababa is around 10 to 12 hours.
Freetown's Aberdeen Beach strip offers lively beach bars and fresh seafood. The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary north of the city is a must-visit. The Banana Islands offer secluded beaches and superb snorkelling. For the UK's Sierra Leonean diaspora - one of the largest West African communities in Britain - Freetown is home.
Lungi International Airport (FNA) is located across the Sierra Leone River estuary from Freetown. The transfer requires either a helicopter (fastest), speedboat, or the government ferry. Book your crossing in advance.
