Routes — No Direct Flights from the UK
There are currently no direct flights between the UK and Lusaka — British Airways ended its non-stop service some years ago, so every route today involves at least one stop. The most popular one-stop options are Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Kenya Airways via Nairobi, RwandAir via Kigali, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and Emirates or Qatar Airways via Dubai/Doha. Total journey time typically runs from around 13 to 16 hours depending on the connection and departure airport.
Typical Fares
Round-trip economy fares from London to Lusaka generally start from the high £300s to £500s, with Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways typically offering the most competitive one-stop pricing. Emirates and Qatar Airways fares tend to run higher but come with shorter, well-timed connections through Dubai or Doha. Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh departures are usually a little more expensive due to the extra domestic or European connection required.
Best Time to Book and Fly
Booking around 6-8 weeks in advance tends to offer the best fares and seat availability. Sunday is generally one of the cheaper days to book this route, and prices for international itineraries tend to improve the further ahead you book. Avoid booking close to Christmas and the July-August summer holidays, which are the busiest and most expensive periods for diaspora travel.
Zambia Visa for UK Travellers
UK passport holders can apply for a Zambian e-visa online in advance, or obtain a single or multiple-entry visa on arrival at Lusaka. Applying online ahead of travel is the smoother option and avoids queues at the airport — allow a few business days for e-visa processing and keep a printed or digital copy for arrival.
Victoria Falls and Onward Travel
If Victoria Falls is on your itinerary, consider flying into Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone instead of, or as well as, Lusaka — it puts you about 15 minutes by road from the falls. Many itineraries combine a few days in Lusaka with a short domestic hop or road transfer to Livingstone.
