Timing your flight to Addis Ababa can make a significant difference to both cost and experience. Ethiopia\’s climate, cultural calendar and UK school holidays all influence when fares peak and when they drop. Here\’s a complete season-by-season breakdown to help you plan and book smarter.
\n\n
Understanding Ethiopia\’s Climate
\n
Addis Ababa sits at 2,355 metres above sea level, giving it a mild, temperate climate year-round — far more comfortable than many African capitals. Average temperatures hover between 15°C and 25°C regardless of season. What changes dramatically is rainfall.
\n
- \n
- Main rainy season (Kiremt): Mid-June to mid-September — heavy afternoon rains, lush green landscape
- Short rains (Belg): February to April — lighter showers, mostly in the afternoon
- Dry seasons: October to January and late April to early June — generally the best weather for travel

Season-by-Season Guide
\n\n
January – Cool, Dry and Culturally Rich
\n
January is one of the most rewarding months to visit Ethiopia. The dry season is in full effect, skies are clear, and two of Ethiopia\’s most spectacular festivals fall in this month: Genna (Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas, 7 January) and Timkat (Epiphany, 19 January). Witnessing Timkat celebrations — particularly at Fasilides\’ Bath in Gondar — is a bucket-list experience.
\n
Flights: Early January (before the 7th) is expensive due to Christmas/New Year demand. After the 20th, prices drop sharply. Late January is one of the best-value booking windows of the year.
\n\n
February – Best Value Month
\n
February is consistently the cheapest month to fly from the UK to Addis Ababa. Demand is at its lowest, the weather is excellent, and flight prices reflect that. Light afternoon showers (the Belg season begins) are possible but rarely disruptive. For budget-conscious travellers with flexible dates, February is the clear winner.
\n\n
March and April – Shoulder Season
\n
March offers good value and pleasant weather. April can be affected by Easter (both UK and Ethiopian Orthodox) — prices spike around the Ethiopian Easter (Fasika), which falls in April or May according to the Ethiopian calendar. If Easter falls in April, book either side of it. Outside Easter, fares remain reasonable.
\n\n
May and June – Pre-Rains Window
\n
May is dry and clear — an underrated month for travel with relatively affordable fares. June marks the start of the main rainy season (Kiremt). Afternoon downpours are common but mornings are usually clear. Fares begin to rise in June as UK summer travel picks up.
\n\n
July and August – Rainy Season and Peak UK Prices
\n
July and August are the wettest months in Addis Ababa. The landscape turns strikingly green but roads can flood and some highland activities become impractical. More importantly for UK travellers, this is school summer holiday season — flight prices are at their highest. Expect to pay a significant premium versus off-peak travel.
\n
The exception: the Meskel festival falls on 27 September, marking the end of the rainy season with bonfires and celebrations in Addis Ababa\’s main square. If visiting for Meskel, book well in advance.
\n\n
September and October – Excellent Value Post-Summer
\n
Once UK school holidays end in September, prices fall considerably. October is one of the best months overall — the rains have cleared, everything is green and fresh, temperatures are ideal, and fares are significantly lower than peak season. This is a highly recommended window for both leisure and family travel.
\n\n
November – Dry, Pleasant, Affordable
\n
November offers a continuation of October\’s good conditions with consistently low prices. The highland trekking season (Simien Mountains, Bale Mountains) is excellent, and Addis Ababa is at its most comfortable.
\n\n
December – Christmas Peak
\n
From mid-December onwards, prices climb sharply as both UK and Ethiopian diaspora travellers book Christmas visits. Ethiopian Christmas falls on 7 January, so the entire period from mid-December through to 10 January is peak-priced. Book at least 4–6 months ahead for this window.
\n\n
Quick Summary: Best and Worst Months
\n
- \n
- Best value: February, late January, September, October, November
- Best weather: October–January, May–June
- Avoid (price): Mid-December through early January, July–August, Easter period
- Best for festivals: January (Genna/Timkat), September (Meskel), April/May (Fasika)
